Evaluation
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
As shown before these are the comparisons of my media product with existing products. The main challenge with existing products which came from my magazine is the fact that my Front cover and images are black and white. This is due to my magazine being exclusive and Mojo magazine of where I gained most inspiration has black and white issues when it is celebrating a feat such as 50th magazine.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojdbDYahiCQ
The audience for my magazine will be that of similar to Amy Winehouses fan base. As the genre of my magazine is Alternative Indie, my magazine represents this group by the cover stories, images, price (as it will be 16-25 so the cheaper price will be more affordable) and also the free CD given away as being in that age barrier i know a free CD does persuade whether you buy a magazine or not.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
WHSmith would be the perfect media institution to sell my magazine due to them in my eyes being the leading magazine orginisation. The dominance of WHSmith would be a great institution to sell my magazine as it would be accesible for all to purchase.
The publishers for my magazine would be Bauer.
This is due to many reasons. The first reason being that my magazine will fit perfectly in the demographic of the company. This is due to the magazines which Bauer already publish fitting within the genre of my magazine such as Q, Kerrang and most recently Mojo.
Another reason why Bauer will be the perfect media institution is due to the wide audience which could be gained, this is because of the wide amount of products it already publishes such as the magazines which I have stated above and also due to the wide range of television programmes such as Kiss TV, 4Music and Magic TV, so advertising would never be a problem.
Overall this institution would be perfect due to the wide amount of products it already distributes and also because the genre of 'Vinyl' will fit perfectly within this German publishing company.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
Those with an intrest in gigs and festivals. The image above taken from google shows the alternative indie style of people who my magazine is aimed towards. The typical alternative indie genre like bands and gigs which is why stories have an aim towards festival and gigs.
How did you attract/address your audience?
Through the images due to the eye line contact will attract the audience. Also the dominant colour and the mise- en- scene. Also by having an exclusive story and magazine it will attract my audience.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Through the main task I have learnt a lot of useful tips and programmes to help me produce a better product for my music magazine. As said before in a previous slide I also learnt Photoshop, illustrator and many other technological programmes.
A Nikon SLR camera was used to produce images. This was used again to create a professional feel.
Illustrator was the main technological device of the project as this is where the final copy was produced.
Photoshop was used to manipulate images to get a professional look
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
I have learnt a great deal from the progression from my preliminary task to the main task. One main factor I learnt was time management as in the preliminary task time management was a great problem but I produced a schedule which helped loads and meant the i was able to produce more sketches and questionnaires.
Also Photoshop and illustrator have become a much more accessible programmes as I feel more confident in using them and believe my products have a more professional feel.

Overall what I learnt
The music magazine production was an exciting, fun and interesting task.
Research helped a great deal throughout the magazine.
Technology used e.g. illustrator, publisher, Photoshop, Nikon slr camera, and Google
Favourite parts:
Production, taking images and seeing final product
Technology- I learnt many different software's and programmes whilst creating the music magazine. I have become confident in Photoshop, illustrator and in design which are useful programmes.
Feedback- Feedback from teachers, peers and your genre age group are a huge and vital part in the development.
Time management- Splitting my time into sections helped a huge deal this time round as in the preliminary task this was not undertaken.
Final: Double Page Spread
The final double page spread has a wonderful feel and very fun and easy to read.
I am satisfied with the final product throughout the magazine.
My favourite features of this page are:
- • Black and white image
- • Title
- • Quote
This page is my favourite out of my production due to the images, bright colours and text. The same house colour is running through this page but with an added colour Pink showing it is an exclusive interview. This was done with my target audience in mind.
Final: Contents Page
This is the final contents page for the music magazine.
The colour scheme has been kept the same as the front page creating a house colour.
I especially like the way the contents page is laid out.
As stated before I found the contents page challenging but due to research it helped me gain inspiration and meant that following my own set guidelines i was able to produce a professional looking contents page.
Front Page Final
This is the final front cover for the music magazine.
Many different elements of the front cover make this an striking piece especially:
- • The black and White image
- • Colour scheme
- • Eye connection
I am so happy with the finished product and truly believe it will compete with existing products due to the overall professional and strong look.
Compare with existing products: Double page spread
The double page spread has some striking comparisons as well as contrasts. As you can see my Double page spread stands out much more than the existing product, which is aimed towards the target audience. Here is a list of the comparisons:
- Quote
- One main Black and White image
- Lure to inform it is an interview
- Subordinate images
- Highlighted text
Compare with exisiting product: Contents
The contents page was a challenge for me as the layout was a big issue. However by research and multiple sketches I achieved a contents page to be proud of. Comparing with an existing product it shows why research is so vital. Here is a list of comparisons:
- Same length editors note
- images relating to stories
- Set into sections
- Title 'Contents'
- House colour running throughout
Front Page Comparrison
As you can see there are many comparisons between my own production and an existing product, this is due to researching various different front covers as well as sketching out my ideas. Here is a list of the key comparisons which have a slight twist to make them original to my Magazine:
- The amount of Lures
- The black and white image
- The house colour ( in my case ice blue)
- The Bold title
- Strapline
- eye line match of models
- Puff of free CD
Production: Double Page Spread
Here is the production of my Double Page Spread, due to extensive research I had a clear image of what I wanted from this page so not many changes were made:
Here the Double Page Spread looks professional but I believe I can better myself. So looking back onto previous research and gaining inspiration, I realised that a quote would fit better rather than one half of the title upon the image. Also the layout and alignment of text needs changing.
As you can see the problem that I mentioned above has been addressed. By adding a quote in bold with various different colours it provides a more professional look. Also it is extremely eye catching and will entice the audience.
I feel as though the 'EXCLUSIVE' tag to this page is far too big as it does not allow the amount of text which I wish to have. The subordinate picture here does not stand out enough so I am going to have another look over the images which were taken and see if there is one which would fit perfectly.

As you can see the professional double page spread follows the motif of the previous pages as well as standing out. The text is perfectly aligned and with a highlight over makes it prominent. The subordinate image here fits perfectly and will appeal to the alternative indie target audience.

Production: Contents Page
Here are the changes and improvements made to the Contents Page. As you will see there are some significant changes as well as some minor adjustments:
This is how the start of the Contents Page Production. As you can see this is very bare as this is an un finished copy. However i chose to include this as I was not happy with the title, this is due to looking back over research I realised the Magazine Title is rarely used as a header on the Contents Page.
As you can see the title of this page has changed simply to 'CONTENTS' this is simple so it is easy to recognise, but as you can see I have still incorporated the magazines title within the N. This is again an unfinished product but this truly helped me to realise to Font style as well as spacing of the Contents page. As you can see the house colour of the magazine has run through.
More text and detail has been added to this version. As well as an image of the front page to make it easier to identify where the Cover Stories are in the Magazine. However i am not overly keen on the layout of this magazine and also think more text an images can be included and the harshness of the black borders does not sit well.
This is the final version of my Contents Page. As you can see it has made a vast improvement. The layout has given it a strong, professional look due to the smaller text, increase in images, editors note having poll position, and also by incorporating a grey background to add to the alternative genre and Black and White theme of 'VINYL'.

Production: Front Page
This is the image I decided to use as I believe it is strong, reader friendly and will make a great huge impact upon the target audience. However i do not like the layout of this version or the Black and White strength as I believe this looks dull. I would much prefer a stronger Black and White contrast to make the Front Cover stand out.
Changing the strength of the Black and White within this image has strengthened the overall feel, however it is still not Strong enough. As you can see the eye line contact has an amazing impact as it really engages the buyer to this magazine. Also by adding more cover stories it has made the magazine stand up to existing products.
As you can see by changing the contrast of the image it has made it a stunning front cover. Also by the amount of cover stories and change to italic font to a bolder much more harsher font it has improved the magazine vastly. Also by placing the barcode in the top right hand corner with an issue date and price it has conveyed to codes and conventions of exisiting products.
Images
These images were taken in order to use for my final production. Although the majority of these images may not be used in the final edit it has strengthened my position as I now have a wide variety of images to chose from.
As you can see some of the images have been taken with my Front Cover researh in mind. For instance:
As you can see these two images are very alike. I took my picture with this existing product in mind. Gaze theory has been used here in both images as well as the similarity in the poses of each model. I have changed mine to Black and White however to fit in with the motif in my magazine.
Sketches: Double page spread
Due to extensive research into Double Page Spreads i did not need to produce as many sketches as I already had a clear image of the product I wished to produce.
However producing these sketches did help me to decide the colour scheme, layout, image placement and also which quotes and length of quote to use.
Sketches: Contents Page
Producing these sketches has helped gain stories, layout, editors note, as well as the placement of the title. I prefer the third sketch here due to the layout and colour scheme.
I hope to follow these sketches to provide me with a stronger contents page which is not dominated by either text or images but has a great proportion.
Sketches: Front Page
Here are three of my Sketches for the Front Pages. I produced these sketches to help gain the colour scheme, cover stories, positioning of the model as well as different layouts.
Sketching out my ideas really helped me as you can see I have labelled each key point so i can see what is missing. You will be able to see in my final version how sketching my ideas has been converted into computer form to produce a better product.

Black & White
The music magazine which will be produced will have black and white images to further the alternative genre and follow in the footsteps of the magazines shown on the previous page. Mojo magazine which was my main inspiration produces a wide variety of Black and White magazines with a key colour, therefore the magazine which I produce will be black and white with an ice blue theme.
Choosing to produce a black and white image as in the research finding that alternative music magazines produced a wide variety of Black and White images and also because it will stand out on the shelf for being an alternative indie genre music magazine.
Here is a link to Mojo Magazines special Edition Magazines which will show the dominance of Black and White covers
From Research into Double Page Spread
I have now decided I want to use a Black and White Theme throughout my magazine with a statement colour which i believe to use Ice Blue. This has come from seeing the different double page spreads with Black and White images. Simple but powerful.
Research Double Page Spread
This Double page spread has a great look about it. I particularly like the way the text is on one half and a striking image is on the second. The layout is also very appealing.
Again the layout here is what I strive for. I also love the simplicity of the magazine colours but the power this brings is great.
This Double Page Spread is too text heavy for my liking. This is due to having such small font in a compact area. However the layout is great.
The Black and White image with the one statement colour, Red in this instance, is what i aim to do. This is due to my keen interest in Black and White Photography but the one statement colour brings the page to life.
The vintage feel of this Double Page Spread is extremely interesting and has an effective look to it.
This Double Page Spread for me is far to colour heavy. I would prefer a simple layout which is easy to read with a statement colour.
